All of the Telegraph Media Group’s daily newspaper editorial systems depend on applications and integration services from their key supplier Digital Technology International (DTI). In March 2007 these applications successfully went live on InterSystems innovative Caché object database. The new core system supports the Group’s objective of becoming the digital market leader in news by enabling the creation of fresh news products every thirty minutes. It integrates production across the Group’s media (The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, telegraph.co.uk and The Weekly Telegraph), ensuring that they are more efficient and measurably faster.
The Telegraph Media Group operates a ‘mission critical’ computing environment, as complex systems across all its titles with news, photography, audio and video content need to be simultaneously provided to several editorial and production teams. This diverse information must be easily accessible for use in the timely manner and format appropriate to several different target audiences. The innovative Caché database that underpins DTI’s applications has been engineered to reliably handle the large amounts of information that are inherent to running a modern media company.
The publishing timescales of national papers are tight – the option of missing a deadline doesn’t exist. Even a thirty-second delay per page can result in two and a half hours of lost production time and equally, gaining thirty seconds per page puts the production team in a better position to improve the products with the very latest news. Caché’s ability to specifically manage a wide variety of types of information makes it more flexible and scalable than conventional relational databases, and makes possible DTI’s unique vision of ‘Liquid Media’ that transforms news publishing.
A key component of the Group’s vision has been to invest in IT to outpace its competition and define what it means to be a state-of-the-art media company capable of the cost-effective delivery of diverse products tailored to its audiences’ personal preferences. The system plays an important role in its £20million+ investment in technology over the past four years, and is enabling the Group to begin to fully integrate its print and on-line services.
“Caché has proven that it offers measurable benefits,” says Peter Green, Operations Director, The Telegraph Media Group. “Just as importantly, InterSystems provides the customer service that will enable the Group to remain competitive.”
“With a reputation for business focus and vision, the Telegraph Media Group needs to run at 120 mph,” said Graham Frost, Managing Director, Northern Europe, InterSystems. “InterSystems is well placed to provide the foundation that enables it to meet its aim of being the digital market leader in the news industry.
