Gila River Health Care Wins InterSystems Breakthrough Application Award

-Agency Leverages InterSystems DeepSee Business Intelligence Software To Drive Informed Action in Diabetes Case Management-

Eton, UK —June 27, 2011—InterSystems Corporation, a global provider of advanced software technologies, today announced that Gila River Health Care (GRHC), a part of the U.S. Indian Health Service (IHS) agency, has received the InterSystems Award for Breakthrough Applications. GRHC was recognized for its Diabetic Analysis Management System (DAMS).

The innovative application utilizes InterSystems DeepSee business intelligence technology to make critical patient data easily accessible to everyone involved in the diabetes treatment process. As a result of this timely data delivery, DAMS enables GRHC’s primary care providers to change practice habits to support optimal care delivery.

Unlocking Data to Drive Informed Action

The DAMS solution was built as part of a pilot program involving 200 patients with diabetes. Working with Pieran Health Technologies, an InterSystems implementation partner, GRHC is able to seamlessly access patient data stored in the IHS electronic health record (EHR) system, which is built on the CACHÉ high-performance object database. With DeepSee, the Pieran implementation team created a detailed data model and developed a dashboard library that provides sophisticated analytical information on extensive relevant patient information including blood pressure, cholesterol, and tobacco screenings.

Health care providers use the data to control the ABCS—A1C, blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and smoking. “Getting timely data to the diabetes treatment team may eventually enable us to achieve 60-70 percent control rather than the current low level of control,” said Dr. Leonard Sanders, Director of the Diabetes Care Program and Diabetes Education at GRHC.

“A truly breakthrough application provides users with new ways of working that weren’t previously possible,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “By effectively unlocking the patient information in the HIS database and using that information to enable treatment decisions, GRHC has created a system that does just that. InterSystems welcomes the opportunity to recognize their achievement.”

“We are very pleased and proud to receive this industry award,” said Dr. Sanders.
